Hannah Arendt once warned that the most dangerous societies are not those with visible dictators, but those where masses are produced — individuals isolated, stripped of agency, guided from above. Today, that mass is not assembled through fear. It is engineered through convenience.
The new rulers are not kings or generals.
They are data capitalists.
We entered the age of surveillance capitalism — where human experience itself becomes raw material for algorithmic power. There are no chains, no camps… only apps, recommendations, and incessant personalization.

Earlier, human exploitation occurred in factories. Today, it happens in networks. Labor once created value — now behavior does.

Soon, pharmaceuticals target him with ads promising sleepless productivity.

His life becomes unpaid labor for someone else’s empire.
A young mother scrolls late at night, worrying about inflation.
Apps detect stress → show payday loan ads →
Debt is engineered at the weakest moment.
This is not merely capitalism.
It is behavioral extraction.

the app pings precisely when dopamine is weakest.
Quitting becomes impossible.
An Uber driver refuses long rides —
algorithm lowers his rating → lowers income → obedience restored.
These are not suggestions.
They are behavioral interventions.

Power works best when it feels like freedom.
The most successful prison is one we love living in.
III. Cultural Inequality: The Death of Imagination
Surveillance capitalism hates originality —
because originality cannot be predicted.
